It’s Our Planet Too

I’m not normally a fan of environmental activists. It’s not that I don’t agree with the issue. Actually, I do agree that the environment needs protection. It’s part of what I’m supposed to do as a Catholic: be a good steward of God’s creation. We have species that are endangered because we are terrible, selfish people.

So why am I not a fan? Because so many activists don’t practice what they preach. Al Gore, for instance, drives around in a gas-guzzling car and flies a jumbo jet. But now someone comes on the scene who changes all that: Greta Thunberg. She’s from Sweden, and she’s been going all around the world for her cause of environmental awareness. And unlike the fakers, she doesn’t use a gas-guzzling car or a jumbo jet. She travels by solar-powered sailboat and Arnold Schwarzenegger gave her a Tesla.  She has a vegetarian diet. And she’s only 16 years old, and autistic. That’s amazing.

And yet, people aren’t applauding. They’re attacking. They’re bullying her, all because she’s autistic. They think because of her age and disability, she must be controlled. She can’t possibly be thinking for herself. Once again, as always, people think autistic people are stupid. If the people who oppose her were criticizing the issue, I’d be fine. That’s called debate. But what we get instead are ad hominem attacks. People are being uncharitable because it’s not coming from an adult, it’s coming from a 16-year old autistic child–as if all of these make what she says invalid. We’re so used to the charlatans, that when someone who practices what she preaches comes along, we assume she’s just like all the other fakers.

For the record, climate change is real. Anyone who thinks otherwise should come to Louisiana in the summer. Spend some weeks in the 90-100 degree heat. Tell me that’s not a problem.

Greta is an earthling, just like you are. Her age and autism do not change her validity. We autistics are just as valid as you are, even if we need more accommodations. It’s our planet too, you know.

Another reason I like Greta is she perseveres. She welcomes the attacks. She says because they are attacking her, it is a sign that they have already lost. If you attack her, you only show your immaturity. (Oh, and to one particular attacker, President Donald Trump, you don’t deserve a Nobel Prize. Shut up)

So Greta, I may not agree with you 100%, but I will cheer you on. Go get ’em! I just wish I knew how to say that in Swedish.
