14. Princess Spike
Writer: Neal Dusedau
Season: 5, episode 10
Characters: Spike, Princess Cadance
Summary: Twilight is overworked at a summit and Princess Cadance suggests that she take a nap. Spike decides to take over her duties while she’s asleep, and the newfound power goes to his head.
Review: Get used to the worst episodes being about Spike, because it seems the writers have no idea what to do with him most of the time. For most fans, the words “Spike Episode” are usually an indication that it’s going to be bad. This is no exception.
My biggest problem is that the whole story could’ve easily been avoided. Just go to a store and get some earplugs for Twilight, then delegate anything that Twilight needs to handle to Princess Cadance. She’s older and technically outranks Twilight. So why did no one consider consulting her? If anything, it could’ve given her that much-needed depth she’s lacked since her introduction.
Spike is written terribly in this episode. In many episodes, he’s shown himself to be a competent assistant to Twilight, but here it seems all that competence is nonexistent for the sake of the plot.
Another terrible Spike episode. Don’t fret, Spike fans, I have found some I do like.
