One Faith, Many Paths: Charity L. Martin

This month, I’m interviewing one of the Leaders at Autistic and Aspie Amino, a community on the Amino social media platform. She said on her profile that she is Christian, so I thought she’d be a perfect candidate for this project. By the way, if you haven’t downloaded the Amino app, do so! It’s a great platform. Anyway, on to the interview:

1. What was your childhood like?

I had a wonderful childhood. I have wonderful parents and wonderful siblings

2. When were you diagnosed with autism?

I was professionally diagnosed at the age of 9 with Asperger’s Syndrome.

3. Were you raised Christian, or did you decode to become Christian as an adult?

I was raised in a Christian home, and I was saved at the age of 7.

4. What is your occupation?

Part-time retail.

5. What evidence can you give for God?

John 3:16-17 and Genesis 1 gives the Biblical proof of the existence of God. In my personal life, I’ve seen him protect him from various situations and the fact that I’ve seen miracles in my life.

How has your autism affected your life? What difficulties have you had?

It has affected me by the way I try to talk to people and the way I try to understand the world around me. Social situations were never my strong suit, and I learned the different social situations that helped me with everyday life. For me, not understanding social cues and to be easily distracted if I do multiple things.

7. What do you think causes so many autistics to reject Christianity or become hostile to it?

The reason I think so many autistics reject Christianity or become hostile to it is because the way traditional churches are requires social skills such as small talk and various noises that make autistic people feel uncomfortable. Also, if an autistic person is a  Christian, it’s a very good chance that you’d feel with something such as your sin, because it takes a while to understand the situation that they’re in.

8. What is your favorite Biblical passage and why?

My favorite Biblical passage is Titus 3:5-7: “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ, Our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” It’s my favorite passage because it describes what God has already done on the Cross through his Son Jesus. Although we don’t deserve Heaven and salvation, God already loves us and the thought of God loving us blows my mind daily. God loves us this much to send His only Son to die for our sins.  Once we’re saved, we’re forever saved because of his love, not by what we do.

9. Who is your favorite biblical figure besides Jesus?

Moses because he is the one Biblical figure that I felt God used in a might way, and it’s the one person in the Bible I can relate to the most.
